How Laser Cutting Delivers Precision in Metal Fabrication
As explored by ScienceDirect in the article “Laser Cutting”, laser cutting continues to be one of the most effective methods for producing clean, precise cuts in metal fabrication—especially when cutting parameters are finely tuned. From thin-gauge steel to thicker sheet metals, laser systems offer exceptional control, speed, and edge quality.
For thin metals, such as sheets measuring 1 mm or less, laser cutting can produce highly square side cuts when optimized correctly. However, as the thickness increases, some tapering becomes inevitable—typically about 1/1000 of the sheet thickness up to 6 mm. Additionally, surface roughness and striations (wave-like patterns caused by molten metal flow) increase with thickness.
